FAQ 1. What general information do I need to have before purchasing gemstones?

For a long time gemstones have either been classified as precious and semi-precious stones. Precious stones have been used in reference to stones such as Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, and emerald, with all other gemstones being Semi-precious. This distinction reflected the rarity of the respective stones in ancient times as well as their quality.

The prices considered:

  • How translucent the stone was (with no cracks or blemishes within).
  • How fine the color is especially in its purest form. Diamond is an exception here, for it is colorless. However, it is very hard 8-10 (Mohs scale).
  • Other stones have purity and beauty of color as the primary determinant of quality.

Traditional criteria for the distinction of gemstones has not been up to beat to measure what is reflected by values in today’s “modern” market. For example, Tsavorite, a garnet, is more valuable than a mid-quality emerald.

Gemstones are characterized in terms of refractive index, dispersion, specific gravity, hardness, cleavage, fracture, and luster. Any Gemstone buyer should be keen to check on the distinguishing 4cs; Color, Cut, Clarity ( freedom from defects), and carats. The deeper the color the more the value. Color also increases the number of carats per volume. Gemstones can be cut, custom to a customer’s desire especially when used in jewelry. This is also called faceting and a well-cut gem will be able to display the desired attributes in relation to light. i.e refractive and the likes.

Prices for mid-quality gemstones are volatile whilst prices for gem-quality stones rarely shift in the short term. In the case of Tanzanite, the prices are affected by the demand and supply forces in the market. Prices have been seen to hit rock bottom in times of global financial crisis such as in 2008 and during September 11.

FAQ 2: What are gemstones Used for?

Gemstones have many uses as a result of their chemical composition. The most common use though is in jewelry. Ancient wisdom has it that many of the gemstones had the power to protect individuals who wore them as well as bring out good luck to them. We still need much proof over this but many buyers have often requested gemstones that matched the period of their birth. Birthstones. Whether true or not, many gemstones purchased by consumers are purchased after reference to the birthstone of the intended wearer.
